Vinyl vs Fiberglass Windows: Which Is Right for a Rhode Island Home?

Rhode Island window replacement contractor installation

Most homeowners we meet are deciding between vinyl and fiberglass replacement windows. Both can be good windows. The honest answer is that for most Rhode Island homes, the installation matters more than the frame material, but there are real differences worth knowing.

Vinyl Windows

Vinyl is what most of our customers choose, and for good reason. A quality vinyl window is energy efficient, low maintenance and costs less than fiberglass. You never paint it, and it holds up well to our winters when it is installed correctly.

  • Pros: lower cost, no painting, good energy performance, wide range of styles and sizes.
  • Cons: limited dark colors, frames are wider than fiberglass, and cheap vinyl windows can warp or loosen over time.

The quality range in vinyl is wide. A well-built window with welded corners, good reinforcement and a solid glass package is a very different product from a builder-grade window. That is why we offer windows from several manufacturers, with Simonton as one of our preferred options.

Fiberglass Windows

Fiberglass frames are stronger and expand and contract very little with temperature changes, so they stay stable over time. They can have narrower frames, more glass, and can be painted or come in darker colors.

  • Pros: very strong and stable, slimmer frames, darker color options, long life.
  • Cons: costs more than vinyl, and the difference in energy performance is often smaller than people expect.

What Matters More Than the Frame

Most of the window problems we investigate are not the window. They are the installation: no sill flashing, gaps that were filled with caulk instead of sealed properly, and rot in the framing that was covered up instead of fixed. A fiberglass window installed badly will leak. A good vinyl window installed right will not.

On every replacement we check the opening, repair rot, flash the sill and seal the perimeter so water and air stay out. That is where most of the long-term performance comes from.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose vinyl if you want the best value, low maintenance and white or light frames, which covers most Rhode Island homes.
  • Choose fiberglass if you want dark exterior colors, slimmer frames, or the strongest, most stable frame and the budget allows.

Our replacement windows typically run $680 to $780 per window installed, with the price per window dropping on larger jobs. See our window pricing for details.
