Each village has its own kind of house: Rumford, the site of the original settlement, has Queen Anne and Shingle Style homes in its historic district; Riverside started as a summer colony, and many of its converted summer cottages are now year-round homes; Phillipsdale grew as a mill company town; and Kent Heights filled with contractor-built subdivisions after World War II.

Permits and Historic District Rules in East Providence

Permits go through the East Providence Building Inspection Division at City Hall, 145 Taunton Avenue, Room 204, (401) 435-7722, with applications filed online. Under the state building code, replacing a full window (frame and sash) requires a permit. We pull the permits for our work.

East Providence has local historic district zoning, and its Historic District Commission issues Certificates of Appropriateness for exterior changes in local districts, which include Rumford and Hunt's Mill.
